Different drainage problems need different solutions. Channel drains (also called linear or ACO drains) are surface-mounted grated channels typically installed at the edge of a driveway or patio to intercept surface water before it reaches the road or a neighbour's property. They're the most common drainage addition for new driveway installations, particularly when impermeable surfaces like tarmac or solid block paving are used.
Soakaways are underground chambers — usually filled with crate modules or rubble — that collect surface water and allow it to percolate gradually into the surrounding soil. French drains (also called land drains) are perforated pipes buried in a gravel-filled trench, used to intercept groundwater and redirect it away from buildings, foundations, or waterlogged areas. We also install surface water drainage connecting to existing mains drainage where a soakaway isn't feasible due to soil type or space constraints.
The most obvious sign you need drainage is standing water. If puddles sit on your driveway for hours after rain, water pools against your house walls, or your garden is consistently boggy in one area, there's a drainage problem that won't fix itself. Left unaddressed, poor drainage undermines paving (causing sinking and cracking), damages foundations, encourages damp in buildings, and kills lawns and planting.
Drainage is also a regulatory requirement in many situations. If you're installing a new impermeable driveway over more than five square metres of your front garden and water would drain onto the public highway, you're required to manage surface water within your property — typically via a soakaway or channel drain. This applies to tarmac, non-permeable block paving, and resin bonded surfaces. We factor drainage into all our driveway and patio quotes where it's needed, so there are no surprises.
It depends on the driveway surface and where the water goes. If you're laying an impermeable surface (tarmac, non-permeable block paving) over more than five square metres of front garden, and the surface water would drain towards the public highway, you need to manage that water within your property. A soakaway is the most common solution — it collects surface water and lets it soak gradually into the ground.
If you choose a permeable surface — such as gravel, permeable block paving, or resin bound — the water drains straight through the surface into the ground, so a soakaway isn't needed. For rear-garden patios, the drainage requirement is less prescriptive, but proper drainage falls are still essential to prevent water pooling against your house. We assess every site individually and advise on the most practical drainage approach during the site visit.
Drainage Installation Across Berkhamsted & the A41 Corridor
We install drainage systems across Berkhamsted, Hemel Hempstead, Tring, Aylesbury, and surrounding areas — for new installations and existing drainage problems.
Drainage costs depend on the type of system, the length of pipework, the depth of excavation, and the soil conditions on your property. A simple channel drain across the bottom of a driveway is a relatively straightforward addition. A full soakaway — which involves excavating a large chamber, installing crate modules, and connecting inlet pipes — is a bigger job. French drain installations vary by length and depth.
Where drainage is being installed as part of a new driveway or patio, the groundwork is already being done, which reduces the cost significantly. Standalone drainage jobs for existing properties cost more because of the additional excavation and reinstatement involved. We provide itemised quotes after a site visit, typically within three days. No deposit required.
We start with a site visit to understand where the water is coming from, where it's going, and what's causing the problem. For new driveway or patio installations, we design the drainage as part of the overall project. For standalone drainage work, we survey the garden, check soil percolation rates (how quickly water drains through the ground), and design a system that addresses the specific problem — whether that's surface water from hard surfaces, groundwater from a high water table, or a combination.
Installation involves excavating to the required depth, laying drainage pipe or installing soakaway crates on a gravel bed, connecting inlet channels or gullies, backfilling with clean aggregate, and reinstating the surface. We test the system with water before backfilling to confirm it drains correctly and at the right capacity. All excavated waste is removed from site. We guarantee our drainage installations for 12 months.
