Block paving works across almost any external surface — driveways, front paths, rear patios, garden walkways, and commercial forecourts. The versatility comes from the range of materials, sizes, and laying patterns available. Concrete blocks are the most common and cost-effective option, available in dozens of colours from charcoal and slate grey through to terracotta, buff, and brindle blends. Clay pavers offer a more traditional aesthetic with deeper, richer colours that don't fade over time.
The laying pattern has a significant impact on both appearance and structural integrity. Herringbone is the strongest pattern and the standard choice for driveways — it locks the blocks together under vehicle loads and prevents shifting. Stretcher bond offers a clean, linear look suited to paths and patios. Basketweave creates a classic, symmetrical pattern that works well for period properties. We discuss the options during the site visit so you can see sample materials and choose a combination that suits your property.
A block paved driveway, laid on a proper sub-base with correct edge restraints, typically lasts 20 to 30 years. If an individual block cracks or stains, it can be lifted out and replaced without disturbing the rest of the surface — something that's impossible with poured surfaces like resin bound or tarmac. This makes block paving one of the most practical long-term options for busy driveways.
Permeable block paving is also available, where wider joints or specially designed blocks allow rainwater to drain through into the sub-base below. This removes the need for separate drainage or soakaways and means you're less likely to need planning permission for front garden installations. Block paving also adds genuine kerb appeal and is consistently shown to increase property value — estate agents frequently cite it as one of the most cost-effective external improvements homeowners can make.
The cost of block paving varies depending on the area to be covered, the type of blocks you choose, and how much groundwork is needed. Concrete blocks are the most affordable; clay pavers and tumbled-effect blocks sit at the higher end. The sub-base depth, edge restraints, and any existing surface that needs removing all affect the groundwork cost, which is often the largest part of the total price.
We quote after a site visit rather than over the phone — every driveway is different, and the groundwork requirements can only be assessed properly in person. Your quote will be fully itemised: excavation, sub-base, edging, blocks, kiln-dried sand, compaction, and waste removal. We aim to get a quote back to you within three days of the visit. No deposit required — you only pay on completion.
Block Paving Across Berkhamsted & Beyond
We install block paving for homeowners across Berkhamsted, Hemel Hempstead, Aylesbury, Tring, and the wider Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire areas — driveways, patios, and paths.
In most cases, you don't need planning permission to block pave your driveway — provided the surface is permeable or the water drains to a permeable area within your property. The key threshold is five square metres: if you're covering more than five square metres of your front garden with an impermeable surface that drains onto the public highway, you'll need to either use permeable block paving, install drainage to manage surface water on your property, or apply for planning permission.
For rear garden patios, the rules are more relaxed — patios generally fall under permitted development unless they're significantly raised above ground level or your property is listed. We advise on the specifics during the site visit, including whether permeable options or drainage channels would be the most practical solution for your project. If you do need planning permission, we can guide you through the process.
We start with a site visit to measure the area, check ground conditions, and discuss your preferred block type, colour, and pattern. Once you approve the quote, we agree a start date. On site, we excavate to the required depth — typically 200mm to 250mm depending on anticipated loads — and install edge restraints to define the borders and prevent block creep over time.
The sub-base is laid in compacted layers of MOT Type 1 aggregate, checked for level and correct drainage falls. Once the base is prepared, we lay the blocks to the agreed pattern, cut neatly around any obstacles, and compact the surface with a plate vibrator. Kiln-dried sand is brushed into the joints to lock the blocks in place. We remove all waste from site and leave your property tidy. Most standard driveways are completed within three to five days.
